I'm sitting in Mjölby, waiting for X2000 to Lund. I've been reading Microserfs on the train, and now I'm typing this on Pomum. Also, I work as a software developer. Am I living up to something here?
Asked mom about a recipe, which she dug up, written down in a nice notebook in one of the many neat and good looking handwriting styles my sister can do. I copied it by taking a photo of it with my phone. More digital than writing it down, and harder to lose, but not exactly more convenient. I live in a glorious world where I can be so digital that it almost starts to be meaningful and convenient. I thought "I can bluetooth it to Pomum and write it down as text on the train." and somehow felt a little old and too rational.
Just blew a small bug off of Pomum's keyboard. It was a really cute-looking bug, and it looked really nice against the grey, but it was dangerously close to tapping fingers. Won't do. Apple modification idea: change/replace the apple to a bug.
Pomum is on what, its fifth year now? (I think so, but this bench is achingly offline, I can't get to my archives!) It still serves me well whenever I put it to use. The screen may not be the brightest, the burner certainly isn't the fastest, it could have cost less and the battery could have lasted longer. But on the whole it's been a great computer for me, and there isn't anything I've really wanted to do with it that it's been really unable to do.
And the hard drive still lives after the first-year replacement. Knock on wood.
I'm not certain what I'll do once/if some critical part of Pomum gives up. Hard drive I'd probably replace, and battery I'd at least seriously look into replacing (and if I didn't replace it I'd still keep Pomum as some kind of semi-stationary computer), but what about if the screen died? Maybe a life as a server, with an auxilary monitor connected as needed. I guess the eventual end-of-life will be retirement into a closet (that or some kind of decorative position. "PowerBook, circa 2003" or maybe "Pomum, 2003-20xx"?), because I really can't imagine myself throwing it away.
Eight minutes before the train arrives. Eight minutes on this sunlit bench by the tracks, keyboard tapping soothingly with words being entered. I enjoy travelling, the actual process and state of mind. Somehow when you're physicaly moving between two points whatever things are going on don't seem too worrying. If you get something about them done in the process it's a pure bonus, and the somewhat more limited set of available pastimes can often be pretty nice in itself. Bonus time, after a fashion. I am a traveller. When I arrive, I'll go back to some other role, but for now this is enough. This is all there needs to be. Tomorrow I'll be a software developer again. This weekend I've been a son. But here and now I'm a traveller in the sunshine, letting words flow down into bits. And my world is in balance. Complete.
Role changes, yum.
Three minutes to go. Then I'm in car six, seat 24, which is what positioned me on this bench, by platform position C, in the first place, about half an hour ago.
Pomum out for now.
