I'm cleaning out my closets a bit.

Lots of cables on a chair

Now that I'm done with the out bit, I just need to decide where exactly to clean the things to. Fortunately, I'm not in a hurry.

Yet.

Apart from dragging things out of cupboards (which has gone quite well, I surprised myself by getting a good deal of rearranging done down in the basement store late yesterday evening) I've got a good deal of gift buying and card writing done.

The single activity I've probably given the most time, though, is reading Accelerando, a story spanning three highly intertwined generations during an evolution form today into a possible future. It got more thought provoking as it wore on (before ending in what I thought was a rather sudden way), but I enjoyed the first third or so the most, when things were in the nearest future and I kept having to remind myself that I wasn't reading something written by Doctorow. (I wonder who's influenced by who?)

I wonder if I should be bothered by the fact that I felt most of it sounded quite plausible and understood much of the technical stuff at some level? Having control over lots of external, somewhat intelligent processes that extend you, feeling completely lost without them and so on, I'm ready to have that stuff. As I walked to the store today I enjoyed the thought that I still do fine without those things, despite what future generations will think of a life like that.

Then again, I do wear glasses and use a few computing devices, which isn't all that different. Just steps on the way.

Meanwhile, this site is centimetering toward nine hundred pages, my computer has two cores of 2 GHz each and the solar system is very much all dumb matter. Welcome to the noughties of my existence.
