So, the server housing my domain, and my primary email account, went down and stayed down for a good long while as the hosting company performed various revival and restoration voodoo on it.
Fun fact 1: Yesterday, when the server spent pretty much all day down, Disco was released in beta form to people who paid for it in advance. Well, with my mail server down I couldn't get my beta ticket, and I still haven't got it. I've never been so eager to get to burn a disc before.
Fun fact 2: Now that things are up and running again, the actual data, and email, that's up seems to be from a backup of around September 25th. I was under the impression they performed daily backups, but what do I know. I've sent them an email, and they're usually quick in replying, so I guess I'll know soon. I'm not doing any site updates before that ... The last month hasn't been an intense posting period by any stretch, but I'd still prefer to actually have my posts back.
Fun fact 3: I didn't think I'd feel so disabled by something like this. I guess a big reason was that I really, really want to play with Disco. But still. I spent silly amounts of time reloading support and server status pages, and wondering what state my site might come back in.
Fun fact 4: Uh ... is there one? I've written this whole text in the bathroom. Long live laptop computers.
Fun fact 5: I'm playing with web services again at work. They still work better in theory than in practice, and all the new niceness provided by NetBeans quickly broke down over things both simple and obscure. Maybe next version ...

Fun fact 6: I'm a Firefox user as of right now. Version 2's options to always open new pages in new tabs instead of windows and save your session over restarts were the last straws. I currently have neither Safari nor Camino (nor Opera, but to me it's never felt like a true competitor on OS X) in my dock. Opera remains in charge at work though, at least for now.
Fun fact 7: The Secret Life of Machines. And Tim Hunkin's site. If I had seen this stuff when I was a kid I don't think any other "how-stuff-works" or "teach-science-using-fun-demonstrations" would ever have impressed me. I'm still seeding as well. Some things deserve bandwidth. This is also what I'm going to use Disco to burn as soon as I'm blessed with a ticket.
Now I think I'll watch the episode about the telephone ...
