This page won't be much about Windows as such, but much more of motivations to try out other things. If you want information about Windows, look elsewhere.
My relationship to Windows/Microsoft is either some kind of growing up process or a testament to the vocality of anti-Windows people. Possibly the true answer is a combination of the two. Once you start to hear more and more about Microsoft's business practises it soon gets very hard to feel any sympathy for them or find any will to support them. They're just very hard to like (not my expression originally, but it sums things up very well). Sure, they have done some good things for operating systems, but I just can't feel that the world would become a worse place if they shrunk just a bit. I'm happy to let them keep doing operating systems, not to mention other software and hardware, but I don't want them to have any more power than they already have.
What keeps me using Windows is something like its own momentum from being the largest already and the thing I'm most used to using. All the software is there and things are easy to set up and use until something crashes taking everything else with it. And it's already set up and working the way I want it, I know where I have everything and so on. Not to mention all the games I have are for Windows, and those I need a dose of every now and then ...
But apart from games, there really isn't much reason beyond bad habit for me to keep using Windows all the time. Everything I need is available for other operating systems, it's just a question of getting it and re-learning a bit. Which is always healthy, refreshing, rewarding and occasionally frustrating when you just want to do something the way it already works on your Windows box ...
