Operating system are what enables your computer to do whatever it is you're doing with it. They are not just any software, they are the software that determines what other software you can run. One operating system has its own kind of software, you can't take a Mac OS program or game and run it on a computer running Windows. Operating systems are something of the heart and soul of a computer, they have a lot of influence on the look and feel when you use it. Some operating systems look great and are easy to use, others look decent and crash all the time but has a huge number of programs written for them. Things vary between them all.
This part of the website is all about those operating systems. Over time my interest in experiencing and playing with different operating systems only seems to have grown. It's not as hard as you might think to try out a second operating system on your computer (but do by all means read up a bit before you try!) and you might just like what you find more than the thing you just left ... If more people were interested in trying out other operating systems the computing world might have been all different right now. If only more people had tried BeOS ...
(Then there are emulators, multi-booting, partitions, Linux with its window managers and so on, but let's not confuse things further right now, okay?)
