It looks like I'm living through my first ever case of hard drive failure. After a restart last night Pomum won't accept that it has a hard drive anymore, and what little investigating I can do doesn't convince it otherwise. So it's now time to make the first journey to that place in Holland where sad little Macs go to become happy Macs again.
It could be something else than a total drive death, I guess, but I try not to get my hopes up. The potential loss of all data somehow isn't bothering me much. I have a vague worry that I'll suddenly think of something totally priceless that might be lost, but I don't think there really is much like that. All the schoolwork I'm doing is safe (?) on writing partners' drives, and most of my ranting like this is, of course, online and backed up regularly. So really, the two main bothers are that I'll temporarily lose the reminder to water my plants every three days (it's only in iCal and my phone doesn't handle that kind of event) and that I might have to rebuild my whole iTunes music library (but I should be able to trick that out of the iPod, right?). The part of me that loves stats and lists feels a definite sting of pain at the thought of losing all the playcounts ... Oh, and living without a laptop for a week or something will be annoying too, but probably not as much as one would think at first either. I've always got this hulking, steam-powered desktop behemoth to turn to.
It could be worse, definitely. Apple will even attempt data recovery for me, for a reasonable sum that I only have to pay if they really do manage to get something back.
