On a "children's movie", some would say. I could say so too. Fortunately children come in all ages.
And I want to get the DVD to show I want more of thing like this. I also feel like drawing Totoros, finding a desktop background. This Matrix code is getting old anyway ... Totoro and the sisters at the bus stop, that would be great. Or perhaps up in the tree. Or ...
Pure, simple, childish storybook sense of wonder. No violence, no evil monsters, just a sweet story expertly told, brimming with childish amazement.
Totoro is a very small story in all ways. Well, except perhaps for the title character and his friends ... A small family, a small village in the countryside, small children. A place where you could live your life happily ever after.
Hrm, facts? Yes, this is an older Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli film, from 1988 to be exact. So it doesn't do fancy new strangeness like computer animation or anything else. Good thing too, because I can't see anything like that doing any good. The love, care and imagination poured into the film just radiates through. When was the last time a film gave you goosebumps? When was the last time something very clearly looking like a children's film gave you goosebumps? I don't care what you think, if you ignore a film like this because you think you don't like children's movies you're being mean to your inner child. Let go, Luke trust your feelings and use the force (and the place where that quote came from you can skip if you like. Been there, it's pretty overrated by now. Ewww, almost felt rude to put in something like that in this context ...).
I'm happy. Totoro does this to you. You won't mind.
