Will I Always Suck at Fighting Games?

Fighting games have never come natural to me. I played my share of Street Fighter 2 and I purchased and enjoyed Shadow Fighter (a cool Amiga fighter) but I wouldn't call myself good at either. I could sit down with the best of intentions to learn the moves, usually getting as far as memorising a special or two for a character and spend the rest of the time on plain old button mashing.

Which also explains why these two have accounted for the vast majority of my fighting game experience.

Despite this, fighting games also hold a good deal of attraction. They're excellent two-player games with a very simple concept of course, but they also tend to look really cool. And Dead or Alive 3 certainly looks extremely cool. I knew right from when I saw movies of it at the time of the Xbox launch that I'd get it sooner or later if I ever got an Xbox. It just seemed right to me. Great looks and no extreme amounts of depth to fail to master.

I don't dare say anything certainly, but I could be growing away from button-mashing into a little more sophistication. An evening of playing with Henrik, gradually getting beaten more and more often as he got into the game, at least felt like it mattered. A little less random pushing, a little better pace, one or two moves memorized ...

Until whenever I get a little stressed from doing too bad of course, at which point all style is momentarily forgotten and everything really degenerates. I still feel ages behind and lost on how to really master a fighting game, but perhaps I'm at least one step on the right path ...

So I've thrown a controller into the floor in frustration for the first time. I hate the big lump of **** that Omega is, the fact that he can't work like all other fighters, and the fact that I've failed to beat him lots of times with Leon despite succeeding with 12 other fighters so far. Oh, the fact that he's not even remotely cool, just a big ugly lump of computer-faked metal. I'd feel more like trying to beat him if it was actually fun doing so. At least the controllers are up to being thrown ...

Okay ... Could have saved myself a good deal of frustration there. Don't remember when I finished with Leon last time, but apparently I did ...
