Niclas lured me into the world of Japanese animated film, and I read his writings about Lain long before I even saw my first Miyazaki production. His writings and talk about it never made anything feel clearer, but they certainly sparked my interest.
Actually, now that I've seen it all once I can't say everything's perfectly clear either. But that's just part of the charm ...
To put things into some kind of order, Serial Experiments Lain is a Japanese animated TV series in 13 episodes that aired late at night during the summer of 1998. On a side note, I spent part of that summer in England, designing a Starcraft campaign and generally being unaware that I was going to get in touch with Lain at all.
The series has 13 episodes, called layers, of about 20 minutes each. The main character is a young girl named Lain, and that's as much as I'll tell about the story. I recommend you watch Lain with an open mind and with your complete attention, and be ready to have your thoughts provoked. I've heard people say you should watch Lain at least three times, and having seen it once myself I agree. I think I'll see plenty of new things on repeated viewings.
This is one to show to people who think animation is just for children. it'll either get them intrigued or confused and put off, but their reactions will probably be fun to watch in any case :-) ...
