As soon as I broke the plastic wrapping I knew I wanted to document the iPod's packaging. Someone described the feeling of luxury they got when unpacking a PowerBook, but I say it's even stronger when unpacking a new iPod. It's not just some fancy cover over a brown folded cardboard box. First the cover comes off, revealing a black box with a join in the middle. That in turn opens, revealing a white surface with "Designed by Apple in California" on the right half. Then you flip up the paper on the left side (it's much easier to grip than the right side, intentionally I assume), and you get a new white surface (the top of the package holding manuals and software CD actually) with just one word on it: "Enjoy". Awww! So perfect! I'd never seen one of those opened before so it was all unexpected and like my own treasure hunt/discovery. Never has the opening of a box been more entertaining. Bonnie commented that X (where X was well over 50) percent of the price probably went into the package design, but I can't help loving the fact that Apple puts so much thought even into the pacakging of their products.
