Spirited Away

So now I've seen my first animated japanese film. I should have done so much earlier, that's for sure.

It feels like a huge irony that Disney is actually involved in distributing this film. When you see this, everything Disney has managed feels rather flat and boring. This is just ... wow. Beautiful. And creative, and thoughtful, and ...

Actually one of the first things I thought of likening Spirited Away to was Grim Fandango, mainly because both have a quite distinctive art style. They don't look similar by any means, but there's still something that feels connective. Simply creativity shining through I guess.

Read some posts on Slashdot accusing Disney of deliberately trying to stall the spread of this film outside Japan because it's so much better than their own. Somehow it feels like there's a slight bit of logic. Spirited Away makes you wish american animated film had a heart, to quoute CmdrTaco. But then, who misses american animations when you've got this?
