Can't see what more needs to be said. It's computer rendered, it's not Disney, and it pokes fun at every other fairytale movie out there, what more do you need for a good start?
Plus it's got what I think is the most lifelike computer rendered human in a movie ever. I mean, the princess even got toned back to fit in the cartoonlike world. And still she looks more lifelike than Aki Ross if you ask me. Perhaps the fact that the movie is a whole lot more fun than Final Fantasy affects me too, but people really don't seem as stiff over the shoulders as they are in FF. Did FF use less motion capture or something? If so I can see how FF animation might be more impressive as an achievement, but movement here sure looks better. I have no idea how much motion capture Shrek uses anyway, but things seem to move better here. Plus it's got green trolls, pigs and other cool stuff, all of which must be easier than trying to do really real people. In Shrek the creators had a style to go with and didn't need to try and look 100% photorealistic when they didn't want to, but in FF you sort of expected people to be perfectly real in every sense. Only they didn't quite reach it.
Oh, to reverse something a reviewer said about FF, let's not forget that Shrek's also a really good movie. It just happens to be made on computers, and very well made too. FF looked better in stills, Shrek's alive and has great characters and a vastly better told story.
Whev, listen to me sounding like I know anything about judging movies ...
Still, that doesn't really matter. The point is that I really like Shrek, and that it also happens to be computer created and also a much better movie than that other computer rendered film that came out around the same time.
