The thing I did today was head over to Scandisc after we'd finished writing our nice little home exam at Henrik's place. This time, some other unlycky person had got his motherboard fried by a freak accident and I was just there to get some blank CDs. Much nicer to me than the other way round, that's for sure, and he seemed to be covered by warranty as well. Anyway, I asked just by the way what they thought of a burner that locked up mid-RW-burn. I got the start of an answer in "have you tried different ...", and filled in that yes, I've tried different burning programs. LiteOn burners, fast, burnproof and affordable, were hovering on shelves in the background. No, that's not what he meant, he said. It might be Windows fouling up. Interesting, I thought. It felt like I'd tried burning in Windows 98 before, but I wasn't too sure so I decided to go home and give it a try.
Now it's lunch, three burns and a lot of Automated Alice later and I've finally got those Red Hat 7.3 CDs burned on the old RWs that used to hold 7.1. I got similar errors as before when a disc hadn't been completely erased before I tried burning, but apart from that everything went without a hitch. Have just returned to XP, and not even dared to look at or re-enable the burner yet :-) ... Let the hope of success stay for just a while longer ... I did another firmware update while in 98 as well. To the same version as I had already, but since I did it in XP last time and had a lot of trouble with it I figured it might help nevertheless. Pity to get more evidence it's good to keep old 98 hanging around as important as this ...
