Wheee, my burner's back from the dead! A few days ago it suddenly started messing things up very seriously. If Windows even asked it ever so politely about how it was doing it would get upset, make things pause and so on. No amount of annoyed software tweaking or firmware updates seemed to help, so I temporarily just disabled the drive in the device manager and got on with life. To make things better, all I could get in the way of advice was "get a new burner" :-) ...
Of course, being me I wasn't going to give up without at least trying some classic and usually pointless fixes. So, today I removed the burner, blew away all the dust on top of it and looked at it in an intelligent manner. It looked just as usual of course. So I put it back in, only changing the mode of the unit from "master" to "cable select" (which gets it designated as "master" anyway). Lo and behold, it worked again! I have no idea why. Maybe it's just the disabling and re-enabling in Windows that did the trick ...
And I'm thinking that trying to burn inappropriate or damaged ISO-images (possibly in the wrong program too) is what caused the problems, because now I tried burning the same Red Hat ISO as before, and I seem to be getting the same errors all over. At least now I know what to do about it :-) ...
And in about an hour and 45 minutes another year of university studies begin ... The third one, that's still quite unbelievable. And nope, we still have no idea what we're going to do for a 10 point essay. Very reassuring, isn't it?
