Martin got his Palm (his first, to be more precise) in the spring of 1999, and while it sure did seem cool I was still hesitant. I mean, all that tapping with a little pen at a little screen, it somehow seemed a bit fragile or something like that. And expensive of course, too expensive for someone like me (no job or anything ever).
But then a year passed (like they often do when someone wants to get to a point), it was May 23rd in 2000 and I'd recently got my first ever job at Parken. That deserved a little celebration I felt, and topping it all off was the fact that the economy version of the Palm III was available at a sale in Marieberg (big shopping mall, by Swedish standards anyway :-).
So, we drove there, I got it and I've never regretted it for a second. Just like they say the first pair of batteries ran out in just about a month. Subsequent pairs lasted much longer, but I made sure I got some rechargables pretty soon. I don't like buying new batteries all the time, even if they do last long.
I actually use my Palm for the things I meant to use it for when I got it, mainly noting things and calendar business. The best ideas always come when you haven't got anything to note them on (and definitely not when you're in front of the computer ...), having a Palm minimizes those happenings.
The usage goes in waves a good deal. In periods I'll just carry it around and not really think about it. But then I'll for one reason or the other I'll discover how useful it is to note things on and for keeping track of events, and usage will soar again. And no matter where on the usage gague I am, I'll always bring it more often and keep it handier than my mobile.
I got as nervous as hell the first time it slipped out of my pocket and smashed into a floor, and I sure felt happy I'd signed up for 2 years accident insurance when I got it. But it survived without a scratch, and several more times too. It's got a little battered over time, but in all it's a lot more durable than I expected. Nowadays the front hatch and the battery hatch (along with the batteries of course) come off if I drop it though (and I've just had to drop the tape the hatch since the latch broke) so it's wearing down ... And now I'm out of warranty, typical ...
Some of us just need something with a processor inside to keep organized :-) ...
