I watched the Steves of Microsoft introduce their new Surfaces today. What appealed to me the most was hardware, and the keyboard/cover solution most of all. Leave it to Microsoft to design really awesome solutions for those not ready to leave their old ways behind. For a while there, they had me lusting for docking a keyboard and touchpad to a tablet.
For indirect input on touch devices.
But from then on, it has gradually dawned on me that this is just more of the same old. Trying to provide everything to all people. Running the risk of burying innovation and focus under too many options - especially those dangerous options to stay similar to the way you have always done things.
Meanwhile, I sit here. In bed, typing right on my sheet of glass while my girlfriend sleeps next to me. I am certain I would love the tactility of a physical keyboard and type faster on it. But it would also be more bulk. More things to balance, to prop up. Possibly more heat, and also in all likelihood more noise. A less pure experience all round.
I love keyboards, but this is its own pure writing experience, and I would not want it to be complicated by more devices.
