It took me more or less all day to feel that I was in some kind of energetic state. Even so, I think I used it to a great extent.
I did get up a bit too early though, I could and perhaps should have gone for going back to sleep one more time. As it was, I got up and felt good about it as such, but starting the day with another hour of sleep could not have hurt.
In any case, up I went, had breakfast and then headed out for a walk with undecided destination in the already warm sunlight. Laptop in bag, I walked for an hour or so, then ended up taking the tram back home just in time for coffee.
An idea I got recently was to try and start free days with a walk right after breakfast to sort of get going. It seems to work well enough on weekdays. My plan was to walk a while, then sit down, away or home, and get some side project coding done. It pretty much worked out that way too. I got some decent code written while having coffee, then had a light lunch before being lured out into the sun again.
Again with the laptop ready, I ventured out. The sun shining even warmer, I did not cover much distance, but pretty soon settled down on a sunny bench and dozed off for some nice minutes.
The day was warm enough that a few minutes felt like just the right amount of time. I wandered back home, staying in the shadow somewhat more actively than before, and, realizing I was still feeling nicely dozy, spent an hour or so on the sofa … contemplating my next move. Yes, that is the word.
I could not decide what, if much of anything, I really wanted to do. Perhaps the day was just too warm, Saturday and sunny for decisions. Whatever the reason, after some more mediation on the matter I grabbed a few bags of bottles for recycling, took another walk and exchanged them for some ice cream.
After that, I settled down for dinner, a bottle of beer and Notting Hill, which expectedly left a nice nothing of an impression. It seemed like the right type of film for a day like this.
After all this adventure I decided I felt like some good old Settlers. I still have the knack for it, it took less than an hour to get into a pretty sure winning position on the twentieth level. Sitting down to play, right after a movie even, was another of the day’s better decisions. Listen to what you feel like doing.
And here I am now, the day approaching its end. There has also been some regular learning about Cocoa going on, and a little bit of thinking about tomorrow. Really, what everything feels most like is that I am on holiday already. Tomorrow I am planning on a long run, home-made burgers and some of that nice new apple pie ice cream I put straight into the freezer without even a taste, in an unusual display of character.
I feel like the last few weeks have contained so much that I have not been able to catch up and reflect (including writing) the way I usually do. That is all for the good, I am not even sure if today became more or less listless than it otherwise would have been because of it. Even though I have to think actively about it to realize it, I both got what I wanted done today, and was good at going for a walk or seriously doing nothing when I could not decided what I wanted.
In all, a summer Saturday really well spent. I hope to be at least as good at spending tomorrow, including quite a few kilometers in the forest. I am thinking 20 kilometers, at a relaxed pace, sometime between breakfast and lunch as is my usual timing. Then serious relaxing, with burgers and ice cream (and plenty of water I guess), all afternoon and evening. Unhealthy as it is, or may be, I want to get back on the thinner track again. Or at least, inch a few steps closer to it than I am now, so that I feel that I have got back after all the lures of WWDC, birthday cakes and other things rich in nutrients.
I have been making use of my speakers too, for both background music and movie watching. The seem to be performing up to my, admittedly modest and inexperienced, demands very nicely.
Attached: the cake type which for me sums up a lot of summer.
