The last two nights I have done something which I have often thought of but rarely got around to: writing without looking. I see it as practise both of writing, a mental and meditative exercise and also a great practise for my touch-typing skills (even if feedback of correctness is greatly delayed).
Anyway, the core is simply that I sit down with my computer and write with the screen turned off, or eyes closed (as I did before when doing it on my Imac). But I prefer the screen off. The last two times I have done it in a dark room, with some good music in my ears, the only light coming in from the street through the windows. It has been greaat. Not only is it a whole different way of accessing and processing thoughts, very linear yet rapid and free-flowing, it is also a very relaxing and meditative exercise. I realized the first time I did it how rarely I let my eyes really relax when I am not sleeping. Sitting in a dark room like this, doing something quite focused with my hands and mind, my eyes are still completely free to wander everywhere they want and, more importantly, unfocus. Half them time, I am not even aware if I am actually focusing on anything and that feels extremely relaxing.
In short:
highly recommended.
