Defining lost as simply "not knowing where you are" or something similar is clearly insufficient and incorrect.
As so often in modern life, the problem is one of relativity. You are always right here, and a very high percentage of the time you do at least know a way to backtrack to a place you were before.
What is really the problem when you think as yourself as lost is knowing where the place you want to go is, or, to be more precise, where the place to go is in relation to yourself and which way to best take to get there.
