This week I have worked longer than average days, full of often frustratingly slow progress. I also have not had any caffeine at all while working.
Perhaps surprisingly, I consider it a close to ideal work week in many ways. The main reasons are focus and self-motivation. What I needed to do and what I wanted to do has been completely lined up, and I have been able to work with it virtually without interruption. And I want to do it all well and in time for matters of personal satisfaction as much as for other more mundane reasons.
Taken together, that adds some extra frustration of its own kind when progress has been slow. Things have finally started rolling and providing visible results, so the week approaches its end with some confidence rebuilt.
When I have not been working, I have been watching films. The Fantastic film festival has been going on since Thursday last week and I have found time for five films (plus some more in the comfort of my own home). Clear favourite, heads and shoulders above the rest, is Mary and Max, a fantastic clay animated story with rich deep and dark tones as well as a healthy dose of humour. Highly recommended, and not at all suitable for (or appreciated by, I would think) kids. Like all great films, it keeps being chewed on by my mind, bits of it surfacing into thoughts every so often.
Stingray Sam, complete with director Q and A, was another film highlight. The Box made a surprisingly shallow impression however.
Life is rolling along. This week was good, and so will the next, possibly in entirely different ways. In my immediate future, I see a good night's sleep. In the slightly longer perspective, I see my final festival film early tomorrow afternoon: A town called panic. Then perhaps a little bit more work (I told you motivation is high), and then we are off into the Saturday night, Sunday and great beyond, not to stop until or slightly after death.
Some of my friends are closing down their web sites. I have no intention of following in their footsteps.
