Born, again

The week began with this:

Birthday breakfast.

Not a bad start, I think you agree. I decided to bake a cake late last week, and fortunately Vår kokbok had a cake recipie very close to the classic family version.

I had not planned any birthday celebrations at all apart from baking cake and bringing some to work. But then I realized I had quite a bit of cake, so I sent off a few spotaneous SMS to potential cake-eating-helpers and ended up having a nice selection of friends over in the afternoon.

Birthday present: gin and tonic.

And yesterday, another birhtday present arrived by means of mail:

Bone, the complete cartoon epic in one volume.

Yep, more than 1300 pages of many times award-winning comic storytelling, in one wonderfully thick and (probably) unwieldy volume. I will get started on Bone just as soon as I have finished Jpod by Douglas Coupland. It is an easy read, so Bone will not have to wait for long.

New wheels

In the other-news-in-the-toy-department: During the week I finally got myself a new bike. I made the last adjustments and took it for a first ride today, and it seems like I got all things properly attached in the end. When you first ride on a bicycle you bought cheaply and partly put together and adjusted by yourself you tend to be on the lookout for problems. Now I just need to keep it maintained properly. That, and decide on exactly how to store it at home. Outside is out of the question, both for reasons of weather and stealing. I have space in my basement storage room, but it is a bit annoying to get the bike there and out of there every single time I need it. In all, the apartment is the best place to keep it. Apart, of course, for the obvious ugliness of taking up lots of space somewhere indoors with a likely increasingly dirty bike. Right now I have made space in the hall, but I would really prefer a permanent solution which stole a bit less space. Any ideas, anyone?

New friends and family

I got this on Sunday, so I guess it does not count as a birthday present:

Chili plant.

It is a chili plant (somehow "it" feels a little too impersonal ...), and it is growing at a very respectable rate. It also came with a sizable population of plant lice. I have not killed so many bugs since I left the age when stepping on ants seemed like a fun pastime. In any case I think I am winning the battle, at least right now. (Famous last words, I know ...)
