Life has its interesting twists sometimes. A trip out to Lillån to dismantle and store a cupboard yesterday ended wíth me and Bonnie returning home with a brand new iBook. Mom had got it a day or two earlier for school and personal use, and had of course not even turned it on yet. She graciously offered us to borrow it, set things up and teach her afterwards. We needed no further convincing :-) ... It's OS X and goodies for someone's sake! Couldn't wait to try it!

Luckily, the balance of niceness wasn't too upset after all. Turned out we were unable to get past the first request for a CD during the initial setup, so now it's going in for service with a probable case of broken CD-ROM driver. My first ever (if I recall correctly) contact with a technical support department, and I found it as pleasant as can be when they can't fix your problem. Had to do some waiting listening to seemingly stuttering clips of classical music interrupted by thanks for waiting and generous offers to talk to a Norwegian or Danish support person instead. Nice offer, but I opted to wait. It didn't take too long and I got a good impression of the support guy.

And in the end, I'm still really itchy to try a new Mac with OS X. As I've understood, not every company can manage to retain people's interest through a contact with their support. Telia for example, their "service" turns people off all the time. I still have my good impression of Apple stuff left, and I can't wait for it (or a replacement) to get back from service!

So, the service people called just now. They'll send a paper so we can bring the iBook to the post office and have Apple pay for the transport to Stockholm. If repairs are needed (this woman sounded more skeptical, not as good impression as the first guy :-) the poor laptop will get shipped off to Holland of all places, a process which she said usually takes about a week. Then it's back to Stockholm for final checks and then finally back to us. So, I guess I shouldn't count on seeing it again for at least two weeks. As long as it works when it gets back I'll be happy ...

Silly really; didn't know it even existed yesterday, and now I'll suddenly be waiting impatiently for it for a week or two ...
