So I listen to John Cleese giving some good motivations for why he thinks people are stressed today and why there is less interesting stuff in media. Stress caused, in many parts, by lack of downtime for reflection, seems to be a big factor in his eyes, and I totally agree with that. Just the same thing I always seem to notice, when I step away from the computer and try to do less I come up with the nicest things to do.
So, I sit down after hearing Cleese. And I write this. On a computer. What the fuck is wrong with me? What is wrong with us all? Which is also a problem Cleese noticed; he doesn't see how it can be reversed. In theory it's pretty darn easy to do less. But in the ever-unruly practise we never want to make the bet that actually doing nothing will give us something. It's much safer to lazy-surf, after all.
Martin and I are meeting in about an hour for coffee and website hacking. I think I will pack my things and try really hard to spend the time until then doing as little as possible.
And interesting follow-up thought: I sat down and banged this out in the minutes right after the speech. But what could/would it have been with an hour of reflection first? I'm tempted to guess it would be more or less gone, but that just shows what state I'm in.
Over and out!
