Slowboarding

February 10, 2025

A week or two ago, a friend asked me how many mechanical keyboards I had, and whether I might consider lending some for testing.

I thought of two, and when I looked I found five.

(And I missed one in that count too.)

We spent a fun lunch break talking keyboards and typing. I lent out two keyboards, got one in to try in return, and also got a look at the nicest in-car touch-screen UI I have ever seen. It looked and felt like a really good Nintendo DS game, if that makes any sense. I hope and think it is documented somewhere out there.

Anyway, as I was getting back into work mode afterward, I realized I had misplaced the cable I use to connect my everyday Piantor split keyboard. Rather than spend time finding the right cable, I grabbed my KBD4X instead. It was already sitting there on the desk.

Wow. It is still such a darn nice keyboard. Of all the non-retail keyboards I own, it is by far the most solidly built. It both sounds and feels metallic to use, a little bit industrial. And I still love that it is completely ortholinear. It feels … pure, perhaps? Clean? Boiled down to essence? Or some other random Ive-ism.

More than a week later, I still have not located the missing cable. I would not be surprised if I stay on the KBD4X until my hands start yearning for the more separated positions possible with a split keyboard again.

… will that bring me on to the Let's split again, you think?
