Sucker Punch

Sucker punch is indeed for me.

It is for me as completely as I hoped, which was more than I dared expect. It is a very pure and focused film, an epic celebration of the power of the imagination packaged and polished for us of the videogame generation. When I say it should rank along the greatest action games of all time I am not kidding. This is the kind of thing - or feeling - little action games can dream of growing into.

It is aimed at and made for (and by, I suspect) people exactly like me, so of course there was no way I could or wanted to defend myself against it. People with a different perspective may see it as too loud, too stylized, too game-like, too single-minded, too so very many things. I can both agree and feel they miss the point completely. What I see is an idea taken exactly where the creators wanted it to go. People loved creating Sucker punch, and to me that pours out of every single frame.

For a little while, I was thinking that the movie had me completely at the point when Army of me (the song by Björk) started playing. But really, I think it happened right away, when I first realized I was hearing Sweet dreams (are made of this) to the very opening of the film. While the movie is much like an action game, it is also much like a series of music videos. It tells a lot by visuals and music instead of by dialogue. It took me a while to realize that things felt odd in the opening because there was no dialogue, but not much longer to feel that more movies could do that more often.

Perhaps it ought to be counted among musicals too?

I am fine with the fact that not everyone sees the things I see in Sucker punch. I also think the loss is completely on their side.

And I am looking forward to seeing an extended version later on, but from what I read the cuts made seem to be just right for the cinema release.
