My computer life changed when we first got ADSL at home. Not only was it much faster than our previous modems, but access was unlimited in time and at fixed monthly cost. When chatting about the effects of this, Martin wrote (on ICQ, I guess) that the trick is to learn to have the internet available without using it all the time. That is, use the network when I have a task to perform, and not let myself sit and be endlessly distracted by it.
That was somewhere in the early 2000's.
I still have not learned the trick.
